Abstract

Abstract

The growing importance of visual culture is seen in many aspects of society - television, dance, film, fashion, painting, sculpture, installation and fine art - to name but a few. Feminist Visual Culture looks at the contribution of feminist theory and practice in these media and considers the place women have and the role that they play. Written by women working in the field of visual culture they draw on examples and situations from everyday life.A substantial introduction defines Visual Culture as well as providing an historic overview of the origins of current academic and feminist practice. The volume is divided into three sections: Fine Art, Design and Mass Media. Each section begins with a contextualising Introduction and then discusses the visual media specific to that area, incorporating wider issues such as class, culture and ethnicity. A range of methods and analyses are adopted including questionnaire sampling, in-depth case studies, historiographical overview of theoretical material as well as writing about current practices.Feminist Visual Culture is a topical and comprehensive overview of this field providing both introductory access to the key debates and a more specialist understanding of their relevance within a specific medium.

Abstract

"Architecture and the arts have long been on the forefront of socio-spatial struggles, in which equality, access, representation and expression are at stake in our cities, communities and everyday lives. Feminist spatial practices contribute substantially to new forms of activism, expanding dialogues, engaging materialisms, transforming pedagogies, and projecting alternatives. 'Feminist Futures of Spatial Practice' traces practical tools and theoretical dimensions, as well as temporpralities, emergence, histories, events, durations - and futures - of feminist practices. Authors include international practitioners, researchers, and educators, from architecture, the arts, art history, curating, cultural heritage studies, environmental sciences, futures studies, film, visual communication, design and design theory, queer, intersectional and gender studies, political sciences, sociology, and urban planning. Established as well as emerging voices write critically from within their institutions, professions, and their activist, political and personal practices."--

Abstract

In the home the intricate relations between architecture, gender and domesticity become visible. Negotiating Domesticity investigates the many and complex themes evoked by the interconnections between these terms. Topics covered include famous as well as less well-known architectural examples and architects, which are explored from sociological, anthropological, philosophical and psychoanalytical approaches. The authors explore the relationships between modern domestic spaces and sexed subjectivities in a broad range of geographical locations of Western modernity. This richly interdisiplinary work presents architects and postgraduate students with an in-depth exploration of domesticity in the modern era.

Abstract

What was different about the environments that women created as architects, designers and clients at a time when they were gaining increasing political and social status in a male world? Through a series of case studies, Women's Places: Architecture and Design 1860-1960, examines in detail the professional and domestic spaces created by women who had money and the opportunity to achieve their ideal. Set against a background of accepted notions of modernity relating to design and architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this book provides a fascinating insight into women

Abstract

This is a collection of new writing on the way in which objects in everyday life are made socially acceptable and "appropriate" for women and men. What does the Strawberry Shortcake doll tell us about views of the adult female body? When does the necktie become anti-establishment? How does a woman relate to a washing-machine? And can a hearing aid really be gendered? This book attempts to answer these questions and raise others about genderization in the design of everyday objects.
